Let the reading begin!

Today I’ll be participating in the 24-Hour Read-A-Thon!

Throughout the day on phrenetical :: a state of mind I’ll be posting regular updates on my progress, as well as participating in mini-challenges hosted by other readers across the globe. Check back every couple of hours to follow my progress! Some of the titles lined up for my project include The Yankee Years, Bridge to Terabithia, You Couldn’t Ignore Me If You Tried, Ford County, Pride and Prejudice, and Mud Hens and Mavericks: Illustrated Travel Guide to Minor League Baseball, and an assortment of magazines and blog posts that have recently piled up.

The event officially begins at 7am, my time (5am Pacific Standard Time), and will proceed throughout the day and night until that same time Sunday. While I plan to put in as much time as possible to this event, I do have a family event during the first few hours that will prevent online participation, but I will be reading to and from that event and will post my progress once I return midday. After that you can count on blog updates every couple of hours throughout the 24-hour period (or until my body collapses, whichever comes first). If you’re also participating, let’s encourage each other throughout the day! And even if you’re not committed to 24 hours, I’d love to know what you’re reading on this lovely October day. Here’s to rediscovering a passion!

  2. (Non)traditional Buddhist readathon blessing:

Just as the books fill the shelves,
Pile together on the floor and stack up on the table
So may the joy of the readathon
Flow forth to brighten your day and lift your spirit.
Books already read, books in progress and books yet to be read.

By the power of every word on the page
    May your book be delightful,
    As scary as Lovecraft’s Cthulhu
Or as sweet as a box of See’s candy.

Let the power of the images evoked by words
Keep you stay awake long through the night
    May no obstacle impede
    Your day filled with books.

For all of those who are reading today
Who follow in the path of Dewey
May your day be filled with the four blessings
Of fabulous books, tasty snacks, comfy chairs and joy.

I’m convinced our bodies will not collapse…our minds, on the other hand, are surely falling slowly.
