Thr3e was never on my list of films to watch. Its marketing led me to believe it was a horror story, more frightening than suspenseful, and that’s not my type of movie. But a friend recommended it to me a few days ago and pointed out that Marc Blucas, an actor I really enjoy, was featured in the lead role, so I relented and picked up a copy of the film. I’m really glad I did.
It is creepy, yes, and thrilling in many ways, but it’s also a complex psychological mystery that I never actually figured out on my own. And those are my favorite kinds of stories. I watch a LOT of crime procedurals, and I enjoy sifting through the clues and solving the crime before it’s revealed. But Thr3e kept me guessing until I finally just stopped trying. It’s been a long time since this has happened, and I look forward to having it happen again. I also enjoyed that the movie is adapted from a Ted Dekker novel, a Christian thriller, and that it held to the boundaries I would expect from this type of story. I was never offended, never assaulted by the material, and the creep factor was no more disturbing than an episode of Criminal Minds. For these reasons, I can recommend this movie with no disclaimers. I can’t even remember the last time I was able to say that.
