CURRENTLY :: October 1, 2012

LOVING: cooler temperatures that allow me to keep the windows open at all times and force me to turn off the fans and put on socks. Yay Autumn!

THINKING: this just might be the beginning of a very good week.

FEELING: a bit less lethargic and not quite so blah as I did throughout the summer.

WANTING: my circumstances to improve but maybe not change all that much, all that quickly.

NEEDING: to purposefully choose joy each and every day so as not to lose sight of the vast number of blessings in my life.

five minute friday :: A Few of My Favorite Things

Five Minute FridayIn the mail yesterday I got this fun little package of beauty samples from Target. They came in a cute little bag by Sonia Kashuk — adorable little bag filled with fun little treats. This kind of thing makes me very happy. They truly do bring joy to my heart, these little freebies in life. And it’s no secret that I love freebies. Or that I love stuff, in general! New stuff makes me very happy. But the stuff is not what I consider my favorite things.

Instead, it’s receiving one text after another from my nephew with updates on the opening day game being played by our favorite New York Yankees. It’s seeing the wistful look in my niece‘s eyes as she dreams of what her life could be and where it could take her. It’s the flicker of joy on the second boy‘s face as he tells me that his phone plays a Star Wars anthem whenever I call him. And it’s hearing the last boy switch up the letters of my name when he bids me farewell. “See you later, J.A.” It’s moments like these that are my favorite things.

Five Minute Friday prompts are designed by The Gypsy Mama, challenging us to “just write, and not worry. For five minutes flat. Simply stop, drop and write. Set your words free. Don’t edit them, don’t fret over them, don’t try to make them perfect.”

this week I love :: birthday week beginnings!

I absolutely love my birthday, and I always celebrate for at least a week, so it brings me great joy when I begin seeing the beginnings of that annual celebration. It came a bit earlier than usual this year, but man, did I need the moments of joy right at that time. Yay God! Best part of all, it looks like the days I’ve planned to drop out of routine life next week are going to be bright and shiny. I like to think that’s just for me. :-D [I do hope the forecast changes by week's end, though, as showers on Saturday would seriously derail the outdoor plans I have with my friend Mere!] Nonetheless, it’s beginning to look like a great week to turn four-two.

this week I love :: a day at the park

Despite the way my week progressed, it began quite lovely with a day at the park…

this week I love :: Snowmageddon 2011

As winter took hold across the eastern half of the United States, my little region of Texas shut down. Schools were closed for four days in a row. Ice covered the area and temperatures never rose above 22 degrees. We saw record lows of 12 degrees, and then late last night the snow came in to cover everything with a fresh new blanket of white. Most of the eastern states have experienced record depths of snow this winter, so we certainly have nothing to complain about, but this entire experience is truly mind-blowing for us. Even South Texas has received ice and snow this year! What makes it so difficult is that Texans are not prepared for such weather. We rarely see snow for more than a few hours, and even ice never lasts for more than two days, at most. We have no need for shovels and tire chains, so when winter precipitation arrives we simply shut down the cities and enjoy the day off. If icy conditions last longer than two days, however, an uprising begins to build and people in this area get grumbly and start complaining of cabin fever. It’s pretty ridiculous. And it’s annoying to people like me who love the cold and despise the sun. So you can imagine my joy this week as winter set down and hasn’t released its hold one bit. Makes me so happy!

My Georgia-bred friend Ree is one of the haters, and she coined the term “Snowmageddon” for the winter days we’ve had so far this year. Though I’m not over it all, as she is, I do love the term. For Texas to see a snowy winter for more than just one day, it does seem as if the end might be near. As far as I’m concerned, if this is the way we have to go out, then so be it. I welcome the snow and I’m quite content with extending the season all the way into April. [I'm sure my Pennsylvanian friend Cerella is cursing that statement right about now.] End of civilization or not, Snowmageddon 2011 is definitely one for the books!
